The term “CAPTCHA” is not just a cute way of saying “capture”, which is an appropriate term for what it does and that is to capture users that are not human and stop them on their tracks. It is an acronym that stands for “Completelely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart”. Obviously, it was coined by nerds.

Since the year 2000, CAPTCHAs have been generating simple visual and audio tests to determine which users are human and which are damn dirty spambots. Providing one level of security to a website is not its only purpose, though. It has become one of the best regular sources of lulz for the Internet crowd.
